I think most 1st time visitors to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge all ask the same question, “Where can I see a Buffalo?” Buffalo, or bison to most of the staff and volunteers on the refuge, is an important species not only for the refuge, but the state of Oklahoma. There is nothing quite like the power you see when 2 bull bison are fighting over females. You can almost feel the ground shake. They are for the most part very docile, but I’ve been treed twice by bison bulls who took exception to my presence.
